February 2010: Basel Scala Hall - Stoll Custom Line Array in reliable use for ten years

February 2010 – Ten years ago Stoll Audio was charged with the installation of a custom-made line array for the Scala hall in Basel. In this location with its 390 seats up to five events take place every week. Apart from various dance, ballet and theatre performances the hall is also used for company presentations, political speeches and concerts. Each of the two permanently installed loudspeaker columns is 3920 mm high, 204 mm wide and 152 mm deep. The loudspeakers were designed to deliver an even sound dispersion, a very good voice intelligibility as well as a broadband, neutral sounding music reproduction.

In 2000 Stoll Audio was in charge of installing a tailor-made line array in the Scala hall in Basel. The hall has 390 seats, arranged in ascending tiers and a stage which is 14 metres wide and 9 metres deep. Up to five events are held every week in this location. Apart from various dance, ballet and theatre performances the hall is also used for company presentations, political speeches and concerts. Tommy Otte, the technical director at the Basel Scala since 2002: “We are a professional stage in the cultural sphere. The technical infrastructure must be adapted to what’s happening on stage, because professionals want to work with professional equipment.“

The two permanently installed loudspeaker columns are 3920 mm high, 204 mm wide and 152 mm deep. They consist of five vertically stacked elements each with six low-mid woofer chassis and 14 HF drivers, working together as line arrays. The bass range is complemented by two B-118 subwoofers located in nishes under the stage. The system is driven by Lab.gruppen controllers and power amplifiers.

The loudspeakers were designed to deliver a sound dispersion of +/- 3 dB on more than 90% of the seats, a very high voice intelligibility as well as a broadband, neutral and preferably uncoloured music reproduction. Not only the acoustical parameters, but also the integration into the architecture of the hall, which was built following anthroposophical guidelines, were a crucial factor for the customers. “I’m definitely happy with sound rendition and coverage“, says Tommy Otte. “But what thrills me most about the installed sound system, is its reliability. We didn’t have a single system failure in all those years. We need to depend 100% on our gear, and the installed system from Stoll Audio offers this dependability“.

December 22, 2009: Press Release: Salto Natale with Stoll PA

The annual winter circus “Salto Natale” presents a programme at the highest artistic and technical stage. It attracts ca. 60,000 visitors who get much to laugh about, but it also showcases breathtaking circus arts, colourful costumes and, for the first time this year, a 10-piece live band. For bringing sound to the main tent with a seating capacity of 1200 people a Stoll system is used. There are six Stoll FT 3210 fullrange tops in use altogether.

On November 11, 2009 the “Salto Natale“ circus premièred their new show in Zurich-Kloten. This year’s motto is called “Nostalgia“. The initiators Rolf and Gregory Knie present a programme at the highest artistic and technical stage. During the pre-Christmas season, the annual winter circus with that special edge attracts ca. 60,000 visitors. Like in the seven previous years the audience gets much to laugh about, but is also showcased breathtaking circus arts, colourful costumes and, for the first time this year, a 10-piece live band.

Salto Natale Main Tent with Stoll FT 3210 Fullrange Tops

For bringing sound to the main tent with a seating capacity of 1200 people a Stoll system is used. There are six Stoll FT 3210 fullrange tops in use altogether. This 5-way top which is driven on two active ways yields a continuous sound pressure level of 132 dB and has a conical sound dispersion of 100 degrees. The system which is equipped with many small and powerful 5“ drivers has a radiation surface equivalent to that of three 12“ chassis. For the mid/high frequency range this is complemented by a 3“ driver without a pressure chamber and a 1“ driver. Owing to the characteristics of this system the demands of a regular sound irradiation of +/-3 dB and an SPL of 93 dBA with a 10 dB headroom have been met. The system is driven by a Dolby Lake controller and powered by Lab.gruppen power amplifiers.

Prior to the event Stoll Audio evolved an expert strategy for the main tent to analyse the room situation and coverage and also to work out the material and positioning concept. Before the start-up the systems were calibrated and optimised on-site to achieve an optimum result.

November 2009: Demo Stoll Loudspeakers at the Kofmehl, Solothurn

On October 27, 2009 a demonstration of the Stoll Audio systems took place at the Kulturfabrik Kofmehl in Solothurn. About 50 guests, mainly sound engineers and pro lenders, visited the event. The main focus was on the Stoll CFR 2610 Convertible coupled with the Stoll IL 3500 Infralow. This combination makes one of the world’s best PA systems, a fact which the listeners were able to find out for themselves, too.

Furthermore the Stoll Standard Stack (consisting of Stoll FR 2708 Standard Top, Stoll XTL 2700 Standard Extender plus Stoll SL 3000 Sublows) was demonstrated. In addition the Stoll FR 2510 Compact could also be checked out as a stage monitor and in combination with the Stoll SL 3000 Sublows. Finally the Stoll FR 1810 Mini, a small multifunctional monitor and PA loudspeaker, attracted wide interest.

December 2009: News: Stress performing through Stoll PA

Swiss rapper Stress can look back on an impressive success story: he won a gold record with his debut album "Billy Bear", platinum with his second album "25.07.2003" and even multiple platinum plus various awards and more than 85,000 sold copies of his third opus "Renaissance". Again, his new album “Des Rois, Des Pions Et Des Fous“ is currently well on its way to the top. On November 21, 2009 Stress gave a performance at the Kulturfabrik Kofmehl (Solothurn).

Playing through a Stoll PA system, he got his audience raving in the sold-out concert hall. For the FOH (sound reinforcement for the audience zone) twelve Stoll CFR 2610 Convertibles were used in a line array configuration, complemented in the bass range by four Stoll IL 3500 Infralows. The monitoring (acoustic irradiation for the musicians) was also done using Stoll loudspeakers. The system installed by Isitone Ltd. company (Biberist) is driven by Lab.gruppen power amplifiers.

November 2009: News: Stoll Infralow, Infra sub for artistical necromancy

Stoll Audio was able to use the Stoll IL 3500 Infralow in an arts project. The installation “The Spectrascope“ by Susan Collins includes a projection of the video recordings from a haunted house in England. This projection is accompanied by the so-called anxiety sequence, a 19 Hertz signal, barely below the hearing threshold. This frequency is commonly assoviated with visual disturbances, unease and irrational fear and is said to occur in haunted houses.

The Spectrascope

Since conventional systems are unable to reproduce this frequency, the Stoll IL 3500 was put into service. This system is equipped with four 18“ drivers and may be driven with a lower cutoff frequency of down to 8 Hertz. Only with the Stoll IL 3500 Infralow a reproduction in the desired frequency range became possible.
